The Metamorphosis opens with a bizarre but quite surprisingly beginning: Gregor Samsa, a young man, wakes one morning and finds himself transformed into a giant insect. He becomes an outsider in his own home, a completely allienated man.
An acutely meditation on human guilt, isolation and inadequacy, this Kafka’s work is one of the most widely read works of 20th century literature, that still finds its place in the present world.
Franz Kafka (1883-1924) was a German-language writer of visionary fiction, born into a prosperous middle-class Jewish family. His works express the anxieties and alienation felt by many people in Europe, during the 20th century. His most known works are The Trial and The Metamorphosis. In Letter to Father (1919), the writer's most important attempt at autobiography - a letter that never reached the addressee - he attributed his failure to live, his escape into literature to the prohibitive figure his father was to him.
